Illiteracy is part of the underdevelopment’s factors in most of African countries. In South Sudan, only 34.52%, of the population is literate according to 2018 (a 7.69% increase from 2008) Global Report on Literacy. Low levels of literacy and education in general can impede the economic development of a country in today’s rapidly changing world.

The high rate of illiteracy in South Sudan is due to the armed conflicts that have devastated the country for twenty one years before the split of the country in 2011. Illiteracy concerns mostly women above the age of 15. This is a challenge if we want to reduce the rate of poverty in the country. It is in this context that The Bible Society considers this project as its priority to help women to read the Bible in order to assimilate some basic rules of sanitation in their homes.
